Balzan handed Gżira United their second loss of the season courtesy of a first-half goal scored by Milos Zlatkovic.
With this result, Gżira United dropped to third place, six points behind leaders Ħamrun Spartans, who still have a game in hand, while Balzan, climbed to seventh place.
Gżira made just the one change to their starting line up from his 1-1 draw against Birkirkara. Steven Pisani was preferred to Nikolai Muscat who came in as a substitute late in the game.
On the other end, Balzan, opted to start with Nikola Braunovic and Aleksa Andrejic in lieu of Suleiman Jalu and Momcilo Raso, a move which reaped rewards.
Gżira held most of possession in the opening stages but against the run of play, as it was Balzan who went ahead on the half hour thanks to Milos Zlatkovic
In the 3rd minute, Alexander Satariano could have put Balzan in front but his shot from distance was easily saved by Darijan Zarkov.
In the 22nd minute, goalkeeper Jonathan Debono made a good save over a header by Jefferson De Assis.
On the half hour Balzan took the lead. From a freekick taken from the left by Aleksa Andrejic, MILOS ZLATKOVIC hit home in style past goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov from close range.
In the 33rd minute, Darijan Zarkov save well another attempt by Alexander Satariano.
At the other end, in the 37th minute, goalkeeper Jonathan Debono stopped a Gzira corner kick from going into his goal.
Two minutes from the break, Diver Duvan Torres Quinones tried his luck with an unexpected effort at goal from inside his own half as he saw goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov out of his place but the ball floated just over the bar.
After the break, Balzan looked a different side after having appeared second best throughout the first half despite having the lead. Angel Yesid Torres Quinones hit first but his freekick went over.
Gabriel Mentz could have brought Gzira level with a cannon of a freekick but goalkeeper Jonathan Debono was alert to block but could not hold onto the ball, with Maia Maxuell missing from the rebound.
In the 70th minute, following a Gzira counter attack, Maia Maxuell had another opportunity of the game but once again, his shot finished wide.
Five minutes later, Balzan had a good chance to double the score when a low effort from Matheus Nogureira Albuguerque de Souza hit the post.
Three minutes later, Matheus Nogureira Albuguerque de Souza intercepted the ball served Angel Yesid Torres Quinones with the ball moving to Aleksa Andrejic who fired at goal but goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov was on the alert to stop.
Both teams effected substitutions in a bid to take something from the match but in the final minutes Gzira were close to taking a point with a pair of shots by Nikolai Muscat and Luke Tabone shots but both efforts finished wide.
